Ziwa rhino sanctuary is the best and most wonderful destination that harbors wild and endangered rhinos in Uganda. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can find endangered rhinos. It is found in the Nakasongora district, enroute to Murchison Falls national Park on the Gulu Highway. In the 1990s, Uganda had a large population of rhinos, but severe deaths, poaching, and hunting occurred during the enormous conflicts of the 1970s, and rhinos were extinct by 1983.
After this, a lot of efforts were put in place in order to restore these rhinos in Uganda, and in the year 2005, the Rhino Fund Uganda built the reserve and reintroduced rhinos. Ziwa is the only spot in the world where you can track rhinos on foot; it’s a fantastic and thrilling experience to see the white rhinoceros! After the events of the 1990s, this location was guarded 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The rhino sanctuary is committed to rebuilding rhino populations by providing a secure haven for the animals. Rhinos may reproduce and develop without fear of outside influences since the 70-square-kilometer sanctuary is totally enclosed by an electric fence that rises to a height of two meters to keep away any unwelcome invaders.
The Ziwa rhino sanctuary employs around 78 highly qualified and professional park rangers who collaborate with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Ziwa Ranchers Limited. It began with six rhinos and has now grown to over 30 animals.
Aside from rhinos, the sanctuary harbors a variety of birds, reptiles, and 40 mammal species, including antelopes, and monkeys. Though rhino tracking is the main activity, there is plenty to do and see in the sanctuary, including bird watching and nature walks. Safaris are carried out within the Rhino sanctuary.
