The reserve is located in the northern part of Uganda, specifically in the Moroto District, and the reserve is found in the Karamoja district with 590 square kilometers of land. The conditions of the Matheniko wildlife reserves are similar to those of the Masai Mara land.

This is one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves out of the twelve game reserves found in Uganda. It lies within the semi-arid areas but the rains set in, especially in April, May and November.

The reserve is near the Mountain Elgon National Park and, thus, visitors can combine the Mount Elgon National Park hiking safari with wildlife viewing in the Matheniko Wildlife Reserve.

The landscape of the wildlife reserve is very interesting since it is near the Kidepo Valley National Park. Because it is isolated and has a helpless framework, Matheniko game hold is one of Uganda’s least developed, considered, and visited sites.

The Karamajong people, who were rustlers with the clans in their area, have largely taken over the territory. These people also used to have firearms that they had obtained from an armed forces dormitory, only to be abandoned by departing government fighters when another administration took power.

Things to see in Matheniko Wildlife Reserve

Matheniko game reserve features several animals that can be seen in the landscape. The species that flock here are those that can survive harsh climatic conditions because the place is majorly composed of semi-arid areas with limited rain fall. The animals here can spend more time without drinking.

However, the population of the animals is not all that big compared to when you say “Kidepeo Valley National.” Animals such as jackals, leopards, and hyenas can be seen in the Metheniko wildlife reserve. Patas monkeys, mandrill monkeys, and vervet monkeys make up the primate population.

This reserve is home to dik-dik, eland, mountain reedbuck, roan impala, Uganda kob, Oribi, Bright’s gazelle, Topi, duikers, and waterbuck, as well as pronghorns. Cape buffalo can be found at the Matheniko Wildlife Sanctuary.

Geckos, skinks, chameleons, puff adders, small reptiles, large screen reptiles, water snakes, and huge stone pythons are among the reptiles on display. Blue duikers, bohor reedbucks, Bright’s gazelles, elands, cheetahs, lesser kudus, mountain reedbucks, roan impalas, serval felines, striped hyenas, Topis, and wildcats are all scarce outside the Karamoja region.

What can you do in the Matheniko game reserve in Uganda?

Visitors can take part in both wild and sport hunting; visitors can, with the aid of the guide, drive through the reserve and see various animals, including the hugest cat and the antelope. In Matheniko, hunting is critical and has been done. It is being criticized. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has to grant the hunting permit to do this activity.

On hiking safaris, the topography of Karamonja is generally elevated and composed of raised hills and mountains, giving adventurers numerous alternatives for hiking or rock climbing.

Cultural encounters, the community experience, is high, and when you go to this wildlife reserve, believe me, you will be amazed by the activities of the people and appreciate their traditional customs, dances, and best of all, how they live, which is so very interesting.

They have experts and pieces available for tourists to purchase at reasonable prices, much like any other human civilization. Going to a social dance exhibition is probably the most thrilling thing to do in Karamajong town. If you’ve been to the Masai public, you might have a sense of what’s going on with the Karimojong dance.

Visitors interested in photographing the beautiful African sky, the majestic sunrise, and the deep sunset will find no better place than the Matheniko Wildlife Reserve.
