Today we look at some of the Mountain gorilla families in Rwanda, which are found in the Volcanoes national park.

The Bwenge Gorilla Family

It consists of ten members; one of them is a Silverback. The word “bwenge” means “brightness.” On Mount Bisoke, this family lives near the Ugyenda family. This group has eleven members and one silverback, making up the Ugyenda Group.

The word “ugyenda” means “leaving.

“This is also one of the gorilla families in the area, which has about 25 members, with the dominant two being silverbacks. “The Agasha” means the news. Previously, this gorilla family was once known as Group 13, but at that time, Agasha had defeated its Silverback and claimed leadership of the group.

The Hirwa gorilla family

It consists of twelve gorillas and is led by a silverback. The words “hirwa” mean “being lucky or lucky,” and this group was established after it emerged from the Sabinyo family and the others from Group 13. Ti usually moves around the Mount Sabinyo area, and it is the park with the twins.

Sabinyo Gorilla family:

This is the 12-member family group ruled by two silverbacks. It got its name from the nearby mountain, Sabinyo. This gorilla family lives on Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga’s slopes. It is located in the middle of the Virunga Volcano Mountains. Sabyinyo is a word that means “Old Man’s Teeth.” And it is fascinating to visit this gorilla family. It has 15 members and three silverbacks. Some visitors refer to it as the Susa B, because it is the group that splits off from the original Susa family. It keeps moving around the Karisimbi volcanoes.

Susa gorilla family;

This family had 29 members and three silverbacks before splitting in two. It gets its name from the Susa River. Dian Fossey focused her research on this particular group. When it gave birth to twins, Impano and Byishimo, it became even more popular.

The Umubano Gorilla family

It features 11 members, led by a dominant silverback. In native Kinyarwanda, Umubano means “living together.” This family broke away from the Amahoro gorillas to start their own despite sharing the same land as Amahoro, they live peacefully together.
